Fighting to Protect Our Players

Notre Dame Professor Chang’s Research Could Change the Impact of a Concussion.

Football. One of America’s most beloved pastimes. Raw, powerful, and physical, the game captivates fans, players, and coaches alike. But, the sport is rough and fierce, and the impact of a hard hit can change a life - forever.

The numbers are sobering. This year, 1.7 million Americans will suffer a traumatic brain injury from incidents of all kinds. Currently, when someone suffers a traumatic brain injury or concussion, there is no way to immediately counteract the damage that is caused.

Through the support of an NFL Charities Medical Grant, Notre Dame Chemistry Professor Mayland Chang is developing an injectable compound that will help rescue damaged brain cells. Dr. Chang’s research gives us hope that we can improve an injured person’s initial outcome by halting the cascade of damage.
